Product Description
We are designed to make connections to God through prayer in more ways than we can imagine. Prayer can be so much more than a simple conversation. It can be a wordless connection with God, a step beyond the boundary of the separated self. It can be a way to listen to the silence. And it can be learned. We can learn how to pray in ways we never thought possible. It doesn't take more effort; it takes more understanding. Wilson's book shows how the brain is designed by God * To calm itself * To relax into love * To become increasingly aware of how connected everything is in God * To experience a deeper intimacy with our creator Prayer is something that our brains want to do with a little help. Ken Wilson tells us how. "Hands down, this is the best book on prayer that I have ever read." - Phyllis Tickle About the Author: Ken Wilson is Senior Pastor of the Vineyard Church of Ann Arbor. Ken is active in national environmental initiatives and efforts to open new dialogue between secular science and people of faith. His church is noted for serving the poor; engaging those beyond the reach of contemporary Christianity; and exploring contemplative prayer disciplines, serving as online host to The Divine Hours. He is also the author of Jesus Brand Spirituality.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Mystically Wired By: Ken Wilson Review  Jun 10, 2010
I really enjoyed reading this book. I have a hard time getting around to praying. If its not being able to get somewhere quiet, it's my mind is so much in a confusion I don't know what to say and how. This book by Rev. Wilson breaks praying down for you and gives you exercise in how to slow your brain down so you can focus. His suggestion on reciting different verses from the Bible, help you to get in the mind set and calm your mind as well as your body. I tried some of these methods and they do work. I picked Psalms 23 a The Lord's Prayer to get in the right frame of mind to pray. It is difficult form to block out noises in my environment and faze out other thoughts in my head. He states that it takes practice.
He suggest taking 3-5 minute mine prayer periods and gradually increase your length and time. I know I have to work on this a lot. He says to think about the good in people and not their faults and how they have hurt you. This will put the bitterness aside and bring you closer to God. This is something I really need to work on. All of this book is very good and helpful to anyone who needs help in praying. Those that know how to pray can even find helpful information to make their prayers easier. I would highly recommend this book to anyone!!!!!

Prayer Is Good for You  Jun 9, 2010
Ken Wilson, a pastor, shares his exploration of prayer practices with a little brain science thrown in. According to Wilson, our brains are wired to be refreshed and calmed by prayer, not bored or stressed. As a pastor, he points out that, although he is more or less paid to pray every day, his prayer efforts had become routine, boring, and even stressful. He set out to explore the practices of prayer from Bible times to the present day. He found that prayer is good for us whether we "get what we ask for" or not.

The title was what intrigued me about this book. I expected it to explore the prayer practices of the ancients. I was pleasantly surprised. He describes his upbringing in the Episcopal tradition, his departure to atheism, and return to Christianity as an evangelical pastor. One point that struck a chord with me was his suggestion that it is better to pray for a short time several times a day than to spend one long period of time in prayer. His methods and suggestions are not New Age, as I had feared. They are biblically-based and relevant for today's active lifestyle.

My favorite feature of the book is the Appendix, "Ten Practices to Explore New Realms in Prayer." He has discussed each practice in detail earlier in the book, but the list serves as a "cheat sheet" to help the reader try each method.

Prayer Finally Makes Sense!  Jun 8, 2010
This book came at a wonderful time for me. For a while, I have struggled to ask the "hard" questions about my faith as I attempt to make sense of what I've been taught and what I believe. Ken Wilson's book, Mystically Wired, struck a chord with me that has resonated in many areas of my life. Before I even finished, I recommended it to friends, promising a few that they could borrow it when I was done.

Wilson's approach to the book is one of non-judgemental instruction-showing readers the scientific research behind how prayer triggers reactions in our brain to both heal and soothe us. After establishing the importance of prayer in our daily lives (and that everyone prays whether they realize it or not!), Wilson directs readers to how to pray. Instead of expecting people to maintain long sessions of prayer in the wee hours of the morning, Wilson approaches prayer incrementally-stating that prayer at set times times throughout the day are often much more beneficial and do-able than one long session.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone seeking to deepen their walk with God. It is important to remember to keep an open mind about some of the information, and test it with the Scriptures (as Wilson does multiple times throughout the book). He presents some very interesting arguments for his stand point, and they make complete sense. Wilson's presentation could be considered controversial, but once you read and understand what he is driving at, the content is revolutionary.

Thomas Nelson provided me with a complimentary copy of this book.

An Open Minded View Of Traditional Prayer  Jun 5, 2010
Reading a book on prayer can usually be challenging to some. Especially if you aren't the spiritual type.

This book, however, is an interesting and refreshing approach for those who have challenges with praying or meditating.

For years I had often thought that prayer was a spiritual, in-the-clouds type of experience. More of a repetitious ceremony of you trying to impress God. Or impress others if you were so inclined.

This book makes it a more personal adventure and shows you some of the physical ties that come with praying.
It changed the way I look at prayer. It changed the way I pray. Actually gave me the desire to experience a deeper type of prayer life.

Open your mind and heart a bit for an "outside the norm" approach.

I think it has it's merits...

Mystically Wired, but hard to understand  Jun 4, 2010
When I first got this book, I remember thinking to myself that this has to be interesting especially with something titled mystically. We do not general accept mystical in the realm of Christianity, so I was intrigued as to what the book would say in respects to this.

What I got out of this book is that the author, Ken Wilson, is trying to prove the point that we are "wired" for prayer. That is as beings created in the image of God, our human instinct is for prayer and something that we need as part of our survival. It is a vital part of who we are and a vital part of how to stay connected to the Creator.

If I am to be honest, the first half of the book is a little tedious. It is written to explain the science behind being hardwired for prayer. It was refreshing from the stance that the author was addressing this, which is generally not what Christians do, but I was ready for and looking for tips and ideas for having a better prayer life. I did get this in the second half of the book, which was basically the handbook to improving your prayer life. The author even proves some simple prayers to get you focused on increasing your prayer life.

This book is not a traditional self-help Christian book. It really focuses on the science behind it and is uncommon in the way that it presents ways for you to improve prayer. This is probably difficult for many Christians who have a hard time intermingling the science and the divine together, but Wilson does provide some solid research and understanding behind prayer. This type of approach could also be very upsetting to some Christians and make it difficult for them to want to read.
The good part about this book is that Wilson really tries to walk you through understanding prayer, his journey with prayer and he really tries to make you understand that it is not about just doing it, but why it is an important part of who we are as a created being. He pushes us to prayer as the importance of who we are and the relationship we have with God, not just because we are supposed to do it. The practical suggestions are also very helpful and I look forward to integrating a few of them in my life.

The negative part about it was that the scientific part could be a little difficult to wade through and hard to comprehend. Even as intriguing as the concept of praying having a physical impact on the brain is, it was still hard to get to that point of understanding it with all the information Wilson provides. I even found myself have to read some passages several times in order to get it.

All in all it was a good book, I might not have picked it up in the book store if was not aware of it from [...], but it is worth a read if you are interested in prayer, but if you are not interested in the science you might want to skip the first part.
